At a recent MOPS meeting, I had a conversation with a
group of mothers about teaching our little ones how to clean up around the
house. Most of them were pleasantly surprised when they found out that my
toddler makes his bed, helps with the laundry, helps unload the dishwasher (no knives and forks of course) and cleans
his play room!
I explained to them that I definitely have an A-type
personality and my children have helped me clean around the house since they
started walking. This is abnormal for many, but I wouldn’t have it any other
way. I believe that it is imperative that we start teaching our children the importance
of cleanliness and organization at a very early age. Not only does doing so
teach them a sense of responsibility, but it also teaches them an essential
life skill that will help them in many other areas and aspects of their lives
in the future.
I know that most of us have heard the saying, “cleanliness
is next to Godliness” a time or two. We know that God likes order and we want to
be in right standing with Him. It’s not always easy to maintain cleanliness and
order with little ones running around. However, we should take the time to teach
them the importance of this principle and show them how to do age appropriate
cleaning tasks.
I know that some of you may not agree with my practices,
but I know that what I am teaching my children is having a positive impact on
them in many ways. I would love for you to share your tips on how you motivate
your little helpers, as it relates to cleaning and staying organized by
