The Imporatance of Organization

Happy Monday to each and every one of you! Here we are the top of another week in the life of. Well, another weekend has come and gone and the list of things to do keeps on growing and growing. It seems as though motherhood requires a constant juggling act of “lists” of every kind. We have the “Things to do” list, the “Grocery” list and the “Important things to remember” list, just to name a few.

As mothers, it’s important that we keep things in perspective and stay organized so that we’re on top of things and not getting caught up in the confusion of it all. For those of you that don’t make list for yourselves, maybe it’s time to start. Making lists provides a type of “checks and balances” system. It not only helps you keep focus on what tasks need to be completed, but it also gives you motivation to get more things done. Then, you have a strong sense of accomplishment at the end of the day. I play a mental/visual game with myself. When I get my day started, I create this personal race against time and myself to check as many things off my list as quickly as I can. The more items that I see checked off, the more accomplished I feel. I know it seems silly, but it really works.

Considering that motherhood requires that we wear so many different hats, organization is extremely important. Getting organized may seem overwhelming, but my mother always said that you have to eat an elephant one bite at a time. Start off small and work your way down the list. You can also enlist the help of others. We are all a part of the body of Christ so we should work together. “Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.” (Romans 12:4-5).

We all know someone who is super organized, so call up that friend or loved one and ask for some help. You can even get the kids involved as well. Your kids can start helping you around the house at a very early age. I remember when my son was 15 months old; he would help me put toys away at the end of the day. It just takes a little patience, time and training and before you know it they will be putting EVERYTHING away!

Spring is right around the corner which means it will be time for Spring Cleaning. This doesn’t have to be a “Supermom” task; the whole family can get involved. Set a day of the week for each family member to help take bites of that elephant until it’s completely gone. Once you get the house in order, keeping it in order becomes less of a challenge. When everything has its place it makes the tasks of cleaning and finding things so much easier.

Now, I’m not saying that this transition will take place over night. Depending on your schedule it may take several months, but you WILL eventually get there. So take some time to clean out that junk drawer, straighten out the kitchen cabinets and clean out your storage closet. Hey, you could even have a yard sale afterwards and use that money to get your debt list cleaned up too!

Until our next appointed meeting time. Stay tuned for more words of encouragement and inspiration for M.O.M.’s near and far!
