Martin Luther King Jr. accomplished a great deal in his short lived 39 years. He served as an American clergyman, activist and prominent leader in the American civil rights movement. His main legacy was to secure progress on civil rights in the U.S. and he has become a human rights icon. He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, serving as its first president. King's efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where he delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech. There, he raised public consciousness of the civil rights movement and established himself as one of the greatest orators in U.S. history.
In 1964, King became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation and racial discrimination through civil disobedience and other non-violent means. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 and Congressional Gold Medal in 2004; Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was established as a U.S. national holiday in 1986. “Martin Luther King Jr.” Wikipedia Encyclopedia Online. 2001. I thank God for Martin Luther King Jr. and all that he sacrificed in an effort to make our world a better place. His legacy inspires me to do great things in the name of humanity, peace and love. I can remember that MLK Jr. quoted Isaiah 40:4-5 in his I Have A Dream Speech by saying, “I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight; and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together.” Oh how I yearn to see the glory of the Lord revealed! Let’s all pay it forward and do our part to make this world a better place.
